Some websites I think are pretty neat
Below are a list of sites that I think are worth both sharing with others, and archiving for my future enjoyment. If you're done looking around here and are looking to surf the web old-school by following links, then click away on whatever strikes your fancy!
Note: this will never be a complete list. I will add to it as time goes on and as I make more discoveries.
General
Accidentally Wes Anderson - suggested to me by Daniel N. A collection of locations and photos that just portray that symmetrical analogue and nostalgic-feeling Wes Anderson vibe.
Anna's Archive - Because if I quickly want to reference a well used standard (ISO, IEEE, etc.), I shouldn't need to pay 600 Swiss francs for it.
Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) - a daily picture of something related to our cosmos, accompanied by a short description.
Catbox - a free to use community-funded file storing and sharing service.
gpx.studio - a free tool to create and edit
.gpxfiles. Essential for route planning when hiking or running.Hacker News - your daily dose of discussions, news, and all things tech.
Libgen - Because informing yourself with our best source of unbiased knowledge - the scientific literature - shouldn't be so damn expensive.
Open Street Map - a surprisingly useful community-driven initiative to map the world. Like Google Maps and Wikipedia had a baby. It powers many products and service (e.g. Strava) and you've probably benefitted from it without noticing. I've personally contributed and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.
Photopea - a free in-browser photoshop clone that I've used extensively.
Postcrossing - a site that allows you to send and receive postcards to and from strangers all around the world. A novel concept for those of my generation.
Public Domain Image Archive - does what it says on the tin. Tends to return some fun and interesting old illustrations from medieval texts.
SnowCrystals.com - a wonderful showcase of the infinite variety and beauty of snow flakes. Run by Kenneth G. Libbrecht, a professor at Caltech. He lab-grows and photographs the pictures himself.
This Person Does Not Exist & These Cats Do Not Exist - GAN-generated images of people and cats respectively.
Personal Sites or Blogs
Idle Words by Maciej Cegłowski. Some interesting topics and I just really like his writing style.
Reject Convenience - Go watch this guy's videos. They're great.
Other Bear Blogs
A Bit of a Jumble - run by my wonderful fiancée. A little empty at the moment...
Absurd Pirate's Internet Blog - the ramblings of a witty absurdist.
Daniel N - a downright cool collection of photos.
Project Nayuki - for mathsy techie things.
Technically Good - a greatly ethical blog by Izzy covering user privacy and digital sovereignty.
Labours of Love
Honourable mentions of sites which represent the those authoring and self-publishing individual, niche, interesting stuff to be shared with the rest of the world. No ads or agendas. Just labours of love.
Great English Churches - A site all about English churches, run by Lionel Wall.
David's Scrapbook - a nice little personal travel log.
